The Role of 6G in the Tactile Internet and Haptic Communication: A Review of Requirements and Enabling Technologies

Abstract:   (3 Views)
This paper provides a comprehensive review of academic and industrial literature to examine the fundamental role of sixth-generation (6G) networks in realizing the Tactile Internet. Designed to transmit the sense of touch, motion, and real-time feedback, the Tactile Internet requires latency below one millisecond, reliability at the 99.999% level, high energy efficiency, and massive device connectivity.

The key enabling technologies include artificial intelligence and machine learning, edge and fog computing, terahertz communications, ultra-massive MIMO (UM-MIMO), reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), and full-duplex communications. Together, these technologies provide ultra-fast and highly reliable connections that form the foundation for interactive, multisensory experiences, enabling seamless and real-time human–machine interaction and the full realization of the Tactile Internet.

In its application section, the paper explores how 6G can revolutionize fields such as remote surgery and telemedicine, autonomous vehicles and intelligent transportation systems, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Industry 5.0, immersive virtual and augmented reality–based education, and metaverse entertainment experiences.
Finally, the authors discuss key challenges, including ensuring security and privacy in sensory communications, compressing multidimensional tactile data, achieving global standardization, and developing localized AI architectures. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need for future research focused on ultra-low latency, intelligent resource management, and the seamless integration of terahertz technologies with edge computing to enable the practical deployment of a 6G-based Tactile Internet.
