HeteroLEACH Protocol for Enhancing the Sustainability of Wireless Sensor Network Operations
Hadis Rezaii
Abstract:   (23 Views)
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) consist of energy-sensitive nodes, necessitating energy-efficient protocols to maximize network longevity. Sensor nodes consume significantly more energy during data transmission to the base station compared to physical phenomenon sensing and data processing. Thus, selecting an appropriate routing protocol is critical for efficient communication in WSNs. Hierarchical and clustering approaches prove more effective than flat-based WSN architectures. While protocols like LEACH and other dynamic clustering methods perform well in homogeneous networks, they struggle to maintain balanced network operations.
This study proposes an intelligent heterogeneity-aware approach that eliminates the need for repeated setup phases after each steady-state phase. Since both phases consume comparable energy, reducing the frequency of setup operations—which incur overhead energy loss—enables more prolonged steady-state operations with the same energy budget. To achieve this, heterogeneous nodes are introduced, where certain nodes possess higher energy reserves than normal nodes. These high-energy nodes can serve as cluster heads for extended durations without requiring frequent setup operations, thereby conserving energy. By optimally selecting the energy amplification factor (α) for high-energy nodes, the network lifespan can be extended up to twice that of the conventional LEACH protocol.
