<span style="font-size:12.0pt"><span style="line-height:115%"><span cambria="" style="font-family:">Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) require algorithms to optimize energy consumption and increase operational lifetime due to severe energy resource constraints. In this study, eight well-known algorithms including LEACH, PEGASIS, TEEN, APTEEN, HEED, DEEC, ECRA, as well as MAC protocols such as TDMA and SMAC are reviewed using a systematic review. The algorithms focus on clustering, media control, and routing optimization to reduce energy consumption. In this paper, while analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of each algorithm, the role of emerging technologies such as machine learning and energy harvesting in the future of this field is examined. The results show that the combination of intelligent algorithms and advanced hardware mechanisms can lead to the design of WSNs with low energy consumption and stable performance.</span></span></span>
